Amphipod, any member of the invertebrate order Amphipoda (class Crustacea) inhabiting all parts of the sea, lakes, rivers, sand beaches, caves, and moist (warm) habitats on many tropical islands. Marine amphipods have been found at depths of more than 9, m (30, feet). Freshwater and marine beach species are commonly known as scuds; those that occupy sand beaches are called sand . Studies were made of Amphipoda Hyperiidea collected in with a pelagic trawl in the South Pacific anticyclonic gyre in the vicinity of the Nazca and Sala y Gómez ridges (17°35′ to 26°01′S, 80°10′ to °50′W), at depths ranging from 50 to or m. Forty-three hauls contained 7 specimens, comprised of species within 43 genera. Two of the species appeared to be new.

Hyperiids are distinguished by their large eyes and planktonic habitat. Most species of hyperiids are parasites or predators of salps and jellyfish in the plankton, although Themisto gaudichaudii and a few relatives are.

Phronima is a genus of small, deep sea hyperiid amphipods of the family is found throughout the world's oceans, except in polar regions.

Phronima species live in the pelagic zone of the deep ocean. Their bodies are semitransparent. Although commonly known as parasites, they are more technically correctly called parasitoids. Instead of constantly feeding on a live host, females.

As commensals and parasitoids of gelatinous plankton, hyperiid amphipods play unique and important ecological roles in pelagic food webs. Because the diversity and biogeography of this group in oceanic waters is poorly known, we examined diversity and distribution patterns of hyperiids along a basin-scale meridional transect in the Atlantic Ocean (Atlantic Meridional Transect cruise 22).

The nature and dynamics of these associations are still poorly understood, particularly in deep waters. Hyperiid amphipods (Amphipoda, Hyperiidea) of the world oceans.

Hyperiid amphipods are one of the crustacean zooplankton groups that have received recent attention because of their potential diversity in deeper layers of the world's oceans (Gasca and HaddockGasca ).

This group, known to contain more than species, includes mainly epipelagic forms with reduced migrational patterns.

Hyperiid amphipods (Hyperiidea, Amphipoda, Crustacea) are major components of epi- and mesopelagic zooplankton communities throughout the World Ocean. In cold-water regions, Themisto is the most widely distributed hyperiid genus and.
